Instructions
The Rant Game is a lively party game where players take turns going on impassioned rants, but with a twist…you don’t get to choose the topic! Players take turns drawing cards, spend a few seconds preparing, then rant! Whether you choose to be a reserved, level-headed ranter or a rage-fueled, yelling monster, this game will have you laughing and bonding with your friends at your next get-together.
So here’s the deal...we don’t know your vibe. Some might prefer to just chill and play a game - no losers, everyone's a winner. Some groups, on the other hand, are entirely too competitive for a game without a winner and aren’t content silently internalizing their judgements about their friends’ rants. We’ve included non-competitive and competitive directions to satisfy every mood!
Number of Players:
Any amount of players 3+ would work, but 4-8 would be best.
Set-Up:
-
Shuffle the deck
-
Make sure phones are charged to keep time and capture hilarious videos of your friends
Card Types:
-
Rant: Ranter uses the viewpoint presented on the card for the rant, regardless of what his or her personal opinion is.
-
Opinion: Ranter uses their own personal opinion for the rant.
-
Versus: Similar to an opinion card, but ranter chooses between two options and must explain why their selection is better than the other.
-
Active: May be presented as a Rant or Opinion card, but some sort of movement or prop will be required.
-
Story: Ranter creates an elaborate fake (or real if it applies!) story around the topic, which may be presented as a Rant or Opinion card.
Non-Competitive Instructions:
-
The oldest person goes first – be sure to heckle them for being old.
-
Begin the turn by drawing a card. Do NOT say what the topic is.
-
The ranter has 30 seconds to prepare and can take notes.
-
The ranter must rant about their topic for at least 60 seconds, but should go longer if more time is needed to come to a natural conclusion.
-
Other players then have the opportunity to ask follow-up questions.
-
Move on to the next person clockwise.
-
Anyone can pass on a card, but should feel some shame for doing so. Return the card to the bottom of the deck without letting anyone see it.
Competitive Instructions:
-
Follow the same play instruction as the Non-Competitive version EXCEPT players may only skip one card per game. If an additional skip is taken, that player is ineligible to win the round, but can still rant for fun.
-
At the conclusion of the round, every player should decide who they think gave the best rant (besides themselves, of course). On the count of 3 everyone points to who they think should win the round, the person with the most votes gets a point. In the event of a tie you can either leave up to chance (flip a coin, rock-paper-scissors, whatever) or award all the players that tied a point.
-
Determine how many points it takes to win (we recommend 5 for groups of 6 or less, and 3 for groups of 7 or more), or just rant until you can't rant no more!
Feeling Extremely Competitive? Downright ruthless? Then try out the Elimination rules!
-
Instead of vote for a winner at the end of each round, players point to who they think gave the WORST rant on the count of 3. The player with the most votes is immediately cut from the game. In the event of a tie, no one is eliminated. The last person standing wins.
-
Eliminated players can still ask questions and still vote each round!
-
Quarantining from a pandemic? Like your friends but not enough to leave the house? That’s fine – just play by video call! Use the non-competitive instructions, but the host (the one with the cards) pulls the card for each turn and private messages the topic to the ranter.
